Yesterday in Ignite, we had a very interesting video-link with Peter and Janet Dallman in Japan. One of the questions that was asked was “how do people celebrate Christmas in Japan”, and they went on to say that shops sell all the normal decorations, and that Santa Clause is seen in many shops. Christmas is celebrated in Japan, but most Japanese people don’t know the reason for it. This made me think that Christmas in Britain could soon end up the same way.
Britain used to be a very christian country, but nowadays this is not really the case. Pretty much the whole country celebrates Christmas, but in a very commercial way. I’v told people that I usually go to church on Christmas day, and their reactions are ones of surprise. The true meaning of Christmas has been lost over the years, with people thinking that its all about eating, drinking and presents (which we are all allowed to enjoy), but we must not forget that Christmas is the celebration of Jesus Christ being born, and being a shining light on this world. It is not solely a time to buy buy buy, no matter what the adverts say!

Welcome to our Advent blog. I have the privilege of this the first day.
This painting is by the artist Banksy on Israel’s 425-mile-long West Bank barrier, separating Israel from the Palestinian territories.
One of the things that Christmas makes us think about is hope:
Most of us have soap
Most of us own a coat
But do we all have hope?
Some of us love to swing on ropes
Some of us love to smoke dope
But do we all have hope?
A few own a boat
Even fewer have a moat
But do we all have hope?
I hope I will get it
I hope it will be ok
Is this really hope?
Life at times can feel like a slippery slope
We all need to have hope
Do you have hope?

Welcome to the first Winchmore Hill Baptist Church Advent Blog. Over the course of advent people from our church family will be posting thoughts, reflections, poems, songs, pictures or anything else they like. Some of the posts will be specifically linked to advent, others might just be something that the person has been thinking about or something that has a special meaning to them.
